Alchemical Lexica in Syriac: planetary signs, code names and medicines

Abstract Technical terminology and Decknamen represent key hallmarks of the alchemical literature in different traditions. The opacity this vocabulary makes reading texts difficult and, order to cope with similar challenges, Byzantine, Syriac Arabic scholars soon started compiling technical vocabularies. In my paper I shall investigate two (partially overlapping) lexica, which open BL MSS Egerton 709 Oriental 1593. On one hand, will explore variety sources used by anonymous compiler(s) assemble these useful tools (Byzantine alchemists as well Greek medical tradition; Syro-Arabic lexicography). other, particular attention be given structure mise en page compared analogous dictionaries Byzantine (e.g. MS Marcianus gr. 299) Gotha 1261)
